Birthday Card from Charlotte
One summer day in 1991, Mom was driving to Aunt Yola's house and I came along. It was hot, with a temperature in the high 90's. Driving along a country road, we passed an elderly woman standing in her front yard. (I later learned she was eighty-seven at the time.) She was in some kind of distress. Mom stopped the car and spoke with her. She had locked herself out of her house in that heat and was extremely upset. Mom calmed her down and asked her whether it would be all right if I tried to climb in through one of the windows. The woman said yes. It wasn't too difficult, and after few minutes the front door was open. . . . A few years later, Mom sent me a birthday card along with two enclosures. —Walt
